Tanzu Greenplum 6

Prerequisites

Last Updated March 11, 2025

Before proceeding with the installation of VMware Greenplum, ensure you meet the necessary prerequisites and gather specific information from your existing VMware vSphere environment. You may need to collaborate with your system and network administrators to collect some of this information.

Greenplum Cluster

  • Ensure that you have determined the number and the size of Master hosts and Segment hosts that you will deploy, based on the Greenplum Database size discussed in the Planning section.
  • You must verify that the free space in the datastore, the free memory in the cluster, and total amount of free vCPUs in the cluster are enough to accommodate both the Master hosts and the Segment hosts For more information, see Planning requirements that match your configuration.

VMware vSphere

  • You must have access to VMware vSphere Client through a VMware vSphere administrator level user that belongs to the Administrators group. For more information, see the VMware vSphere documentation.

  • Collect the following information from your VMware vSphere environment. You will need this information during the installation and setup.

    • ESXi hosts IP addresses, host names, admin access name and passwords.
    • VMware vSphere server IP and Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).
    • VMware vSphere datacenter name.
    • VMware vSphere datastore or datastore cluster name.
    • VMware vSphere compute cluster name.

Network

Before proceeding with the installation, request the following information from your network administrator, as it will be required during the setup process. For detailed instructions on gathering this information, refer to the Setting Up vSphere Network documentation.

  • The routable IP addresses that are to be used for external connections to the Greenplum cluster.
  • Any necessary VLANs for separation of network traffic. You must also gather information about the existing VLANs in the VMware vSphere environment and how they are interconnected.
  • Contiguous non-routable IP addresses for the internal networks (interconnect) for use by Greenplum Database. The number of IP addresses is based on the number of calculated segment hosts For example, for a four Segment-host setup, you will need at least 5 IP addresses for the Segments and Coordinator internal network.
  • NTP server and DNS server IP address.

Next Steps

You are now ready to start with the installation and configuration of VMware Greenplum on vSphere. Proceed to Setting Up vSphere Network to start configuring Greenplum on VMware vSphere.
