Tanzu Platform 10.0

Observability in Tanzu Platform

Last Updated March 03, 2025

The observability features in Tanzu Platform provide a comprehensive solution to monitor, identify, and prioritize critical issues across your platform and applications. You get visibility and contextualized data across metrics, events, and logs. The single-pane view streamlines troubleshooting, allowing you to maintain your SLAs and reduce your mean time to resolution (MTTR) metric.

Unified observability across metrics, events, and logs

Observability in Tanzu Platform consolidates the metrics, events, and logs collected from the environments, such as Tanzu Cloud Foundry foundations, VMware Cloud Foundation, and Kubernetes containers that you integrate with the platform. For information on how to integrate your resources with Tanzu Platform, see Connect and discover your data sources.

Based on the data collected, Tanzu Platform builds holistic and graphical topological views, alerts, and dashboards that show the various components and their status and dependencies. You can observe from the platform view and zoom in to the application view or observe from an application view and zoom out to the platform. The ability to zoom in or zoom out allows you to quickly identify issues and the resources that are impacted without having to go to multiple consoles and then connect the dots. Tanzu Platform connects the dots for you.

Intelligent alerts with live runbooks

When issues arise, Tanzu Platform alerts provide detailed, contextual data, including trends, impact radius, and whether the root cause stems from an infrastructure component, or has impact to the application layer. Each alert is paired with a live runbook. Runbooks pull in data from all relevant sources, ensuring you have everything you need to address the issue in one place and provide prescriptive, step-by-step guidance for fast resolution.

Advanced analytics for deeper insights

Tanzu Platform enhances observability with built-in analytics that overlay on metrics and logs. These tools help you easily spot anomalies, identify trends, and detect outliers, giving you the intelligence needed to prevent issues before they escalate.

Key benefits

The observability features provide,

  • Comprehensive visibility: Achieve a single source of truth for both IT and application owners, enabling informed business decisions and fostering innovation through unified metrics, events, and logs.
  • Faster issue resolution: Minimize operational toil, especially around root cause analysis, while expediting incident resolution to maintain service continuity.
  • Proactive notifications: Stay informed with timely alerts that notify resource owners and stakeholders when attention is needed.

Data collection and retention

Metrics are collected at 1-minute intervals and logs are collected at 10-second intervals from Kubernetes clusters, nodes, and pods. Logs are collected at the infrastructure level as well as from the application container running on pods.

All collected data is stored on the platform for 30 days. Cloud Foundry foundation telemetry is available for up to one year. The stored data provides you with the historical context necessary for ongoing optimization and audits.
